FIRST 7 STRIPS OF AN OLD NEWSPAPER STRIP [PUBLISHED IN INDIAN EXPRESS IN 1970S]INDIAN EXPRESS DISCOTINUED TARZAN STRIPS BECAUSE IT WAS THOUGHT TO BE POLITICALLY INCORRECT TO PUBLISH SUCH STRIPS WHERE A WHITE SKINNED ENGLISHMAN [LORD GREYSTOLKE ] IS PERCEIEVED AS RACIALLY SUPERIOR TO COLOURED AFRICANS WHO LOOK UP TO TARZAN AS SAVIOUR ,AND ARE SHOWN AS DIMWITTED ,I DO NOT AGREE, IT WAS A FUN STIP FOR CHILDREN AND AFRICANS WERE SHOWN AS FRIENDS AND COFIDANTES OF TARZAN.THAT IS A POINT OF DEBATE WHEATHER DEPRIVING CHILDREN OF INNOCENT COMIC BOOK FUN ON RACIAL GROUNDS IS LOGICAL AND POLITICALLY CORRECT, MEAN WHILE ENOY TARZAN ADVENTURE OF LOST ATOMIC BOMB IN HEART OF AFRICAN JUNGLE

The same thing could be said about Mandrake and Lothar also. In the classic Mandrakes (which were never published in Indrajal Comics). Lothar is actually Mandrake's servant, speaking stupid English. In 1967-68 the whole comic series underwent a sea change probably because of the Civil Rights movement here in the USA. Lothat became more like a friend and associate.
ReplyDeleteTo Lee Falk's credit, even in those old comics, though Lothar used to address Mandrake as "Master", Lother used to have a large role and saved Mandrake's life quite a few times.
