Many light years away from earth on planet Dromeda a    main event in the interplanetary games  is on it’s height of excitement

“ulgar is pushing junian”

“ulgar” the mightiest! Ulgar the greatest![roars the crowd]

Ulgar slowly pushes his opponent slowly towards the edge of horrible pit with   poisonous creepy crawly at the bottom of the pit,with a terrible cry junion falls headlong in to the bottom of the pit .

The crowd is delirious going berserk” ulgar the greatest! Winner of the games! 

“sir it seems you will have to give the prize to ulgar once again, his fifth straight win”

Braggart! I don’t have an option he is so huge 

And Every woman on dromeda is his fan  …..ulgar… listen to the din of this huge crowd..you like it?

Naturally sir being the mightiest man on the galaxy…replies ulgar

 You saw how easily I vanquished junian , next time bring men and not boys to fight me..the mightiest man on the galaxy is talking down to his trainer

“Do not be such a big mouth.. There is one man who can stand up to you”

“Name him…”

His name is garth.. he lives on a tenth grade planet on the edge of our galaxy…he has great power, cunning and courage

Keep talking you are arousing my curiosity”

Daldur “-says the supreme  champion of interplanetary sports who comes to know of a powerful opponent and competitor

“Tell me more about this garth ..”he finished off huge tyrannosaurus, and fighting against great odds defeated inter gal axial pirates

“Go on tell me more, but I also hunt mighty molan beasts for sports before my breakfast”

“He defeated great spider dionara and led tarquins a gainst the venus people..”

“And what is his record with women?”

“ that I do not know I told you he is not a braggart..”

If he is such a great warrior as you say he is, why doesn’t participate  in  galaxieal games? Scouts are always on the lookout for new talent.

There are two hurdles to that, one he lives on earth which is a very lowly placed planet in galaxy…

So he is a slum dweller, sometimes  such places also produce great warriors…

And the second hurdle is that garth does not kill any body for sport…

Ho…ho…ho..he seems to be a tough one , I would like to meet him…

Daldur you are provoking me, I will have to go to earth to meet him

Ulgar has applied permission for return journey to a planet in sector N.

To ulgar?..gladly….

But why wretched earth?, to survey the place, or a rendezvous with a woman there?

None of these two..i am going to meet my adversary there, now check  journey button on this travel belt..

Garth is mountaineering alone in Switzerland..

[looking up and thinking]… if that loose snow gives in there is going to be big trouble..

Ulgar suddenly appears on the rocks above garth.. “so he is primitive human garth”..

Can he be right competitor for great ulgar? I will test him will melt this loose snow with this vibration ray

Garth looks up as ulgar pushes loose snow down with the help of vibration rays…damn! Avalanche!...i am in big trouble..

Garth is swallowed up in avalanche..

Ulgar gloats—now I will see how you face this one.. you  puny human!

So.. daldur thought garth is a serious competitor for me..ulgar thinks looking at havoc settling down after the avalanche..

Garth is still hanging on the rock face with the help of his axe..

“[ulgar swears ]in the name of horns of great baldur! Garth is still alive! Ulgar is surprised to see garth climbing up on the rock..

SO.. you  escaped from avalanche.. next time I will make a tougher test for you   says ulgar..

And who are you  you villain fumes an angry garth..

I am Ulgar hero of Intergalaxial  games .. Mightiest man in all the galaxies…. It was I who brought down that avalanche of snow and rock on your head…

You did…did you now? You bigmouth!... now I will test you !

Several movie adaptations have been done, interestingly a garth adventure called ghost ship posted on this blog seems to have captain milo sharon the villainous pseudo religious fanatic captain of whaling ship "MANATI" seems to have been molded on character of captain  wolf larson...interestingly the ship which is commandeered by wolf larson is called "ghost"Also capt milo sharon borrows some characteristics of capt ahab of "moby dick" and there is a clever reference to the book in this garth adventure: only unlike capt ahab capt milo sharon chases garth and not great white whale . read on this timeless classic which inspired garth adventure "ghost ship" and later on "ship of secrets", with a bit of legend of "flying Dutchman ghost ship" thrown in--

GARTH STORY—GHOST SHIP

Garth on his way from California to  England by way of cape horn in a sailboat encounters an old sailing ship, which has appeared and disappeared three times in last 3 days  ,Garth is curious if it is the “ghost” of flying Dutchman ghost ship he trains his binoculars on the ship and can see many sailors working on its sails but is puzzled by the fact that they are not responding to his radio signals. Garth has problems of his own as his sail boat’s pulleys are stuck and he has to climb up on the masts to free the sails, meanwhile a storm is gathering and tiny sail boat is struck broadside by gale force winds, and a giant wave drags Garth from his sailboat and into foaming waters of a raging sea, Garth is semiconscious and struggles to come to surface as his lungs are bursting for air

Garth in a last ditch effort pulls himself from the giant waves and as he struggles to surface gasping for breath he encounters hulking black shadow of a huge ship with sails and could hear men on the deck arguing  weather to pick up a drowning man down in the cold cruel sea, Mr Perdie decides that since it is not one of his sailors  he would not be picked up but is overruled by ship’s captain and Garth is pulled to safety on the deck of this ship, he learns that he is on a whaling ship called “Manati” in Newbradford ,Massachusetts Garth requests ship’s captain Sheron to let him off at next port, but Sharon informs Garth that he will not be allowed to leave the ship and will have to work hard ,Sharon instructs boson of the ship to engage Garth to gather the billowing sails on the masts ,when Garth tries to thank captain Sharon and volunteers to work hard for his voyage ,he is hastily pulled away by a diminutive sailor Sammy who befriends Garth and informs him that he should be vary of pair of killer officers boson and Mr. Purdy.he is told that real villain is captain Sharon himself, who is fanatic religious zealot  who mutters bible’s various psalms under his breath and simultaneously orders some poor sailor rubbed out.

Garth is informed by his friend “soapy” larkin  that it is the year 1850 ,garth realizes that he has once again slipped back in time 100 years, while cleaning decks on board the ship manati ,ship lurches and accidently dirty water is spilled on ship’s boson who abuses larkin and while he is trying to whip larkin garth catches hold of bosun’s whip arm and holding him in his iron grip pushes him back,while the scuffle is going on ,  ship’s lookout shouts a warning that whales have been sighted on starboard side of the ship, captain Sharon thanks god for the bounty, and calls out boson cursing him and commanding him to put garth on a boat along with chief harpooner ,boson vows revenge on garth threatening him that he will whip out his hide and string it out to dry , garth wryly responds   “you can try anytime you like”, soapy asks garth to keep his mouth shut,while going out to sea chief harpooner exhorts his boys to put up great effort as the whales are looking lazy…

Olsen the chief harpooner informs his boys that is it is a group of all male whales and they prepare to strike . whale struck by harpoon suddenly dives 300 fathoms deep in to the sea dragging  the small boat along with it water churns furiously, garth asks larkin how long this will go on larkin responds till  the whale gets tired and and resurfaces or it could roll on it’s side & die suddenly or it could shatter the boat and it’s occupants to pieces .100 ton whale is dragging the small boat deep in to depths of hell, when it comes to surface olsen while trying to strike it,s flank suddenly his foot is accidently caught into the steel wire attached to the hook stuck in to the whale’s side.he is thrown in to freezing sea waters and within minutes he is swept away by the waves .garth asks leader of the group to cut the wire holding the whale so that they could go after the drowning man otherwise he will freeze to death within minutes, but he is told that nobody ever cuts loose a captive whale on this boat and the man will be picked up later, garth picks up an axe and himself cuts the whale loose ,all sailors are afraid and after picking up olsen from freezing sea waters they prepare to return to manati, sopy larkin fearfully informs garth that he is in bad trouble and captain Sharon will order him to be whipped till his skin is torn away from his body.

Garth helps an unconscious Olsen to be picked up on to the boat and while a silent party of whalers returns  to the manati telling garth that he will be dealt severely, on board manati  first officer perdie is informed that garth has cut loose the captive whale, mr. perdie threatens garth that he will tear his hide out and string it to the mast ,he is interrupted by captain Sharon saying that he will deal with the situation personally garth tells Sharon that he could not sacrifice a human life for a whale, an angry captain tells garth that he is responsible for the loss of god given gift [of whale] and that he is responsible for ruining the god’s bounty and would be responsible for starvation of captain’s family garth loses his cool telling captain that does his bible teach sacrifice of human lives for selfish gains?  And shouts on captain that according to his calculations he is from future and  captain and all his crew are long dead, captain is a maniac blinded by power and he is captaining a ghost ship, Captain is further enraged  he tells garth that his crew are nothing but slaves in the vineyard of god and they are nothing but dirt and waste threatens garth with severe punishment for mocking a sacred book. He orders garth to be slung on main mast and asks his first officer to whip  the sinner .

ON  board whaling ship “manati” garth is to be lashed 100 times as punishment meted out by captain Sharon, , soapy larkin is horrified and asks garth to escape the ordeal by jumping in to sea, gath declines taking his chances with the beatings, bosun is gloating preparing to whip his hated adversary captain instructs bosun to go about the lashings slowly so as to to torture Garth ,and to pour sea water after each 10 lashes garth takes on the lashings stoically ,suddenly lookout on the ship warns “ whales . there they blow”,whipping is stopped to bosan’s intense frustration,who viciously snarls at garth that his wish to beat garth to a pulp is only postponed, garth taunts him saying “you look tired bosan”,before an enraged bosan could retaliate further , he is roughly asked by captain Sharon to put garth in the small boat going to hunt the whales in place of previous harpooner olsen.

Garth uses his mighty strength to the wondrous appreciation of his colleagues when they see that garth’s throw is so powerful that the harpoon is almost wholly lodged deeply in to the flank of giant whale.

The hunting and barbarism goes on for days four whales have been killed, garth is much appreciated by his colleagues and even mr. perdie and the captain.Mr perdie says that garth is a remarkable harpooner .though he still has to undergo punishment for his previous transgressions.captain says that punishment can wait for some time and in the  meantime garth’s astonishing power has to be exploited.

Garth relaxes with his little friend soapy larkin in ship’s hold and soapy asks garth whether there was any truth in the rumors that garth is from future as he has overheard captain and first officer.garth accepts the fact that according to his calculations all the sailors aboard the ship were long dead and gone and that “manati” was a ghost ship.

Suddenly once again lookout warns that whale is spotted five points from here,garth is asked to go on the hunt before the evening wears out,garth is puzzled at the shape and features of this whale, on close examination he finds to his utter amazement that so called whale is a modern-day Polaris submarine!

Garth watches baffled at the appearance of Polaris sub., thinking if they have reached 20 th century or Polaris has crossed over in time wrap to 19^th century, leader of the hunting party seeing Garth’s hesitation asks him to throw his harpoon and refuses to believe garth that this was not a whale, meanwhile captain and one of crew aboard Polaris submarine are watching a small boat from ancient sailing ship newbradford captain recognizes the ship like one of his ancestors’ had commanded one such whaling sailing ship back in 1850s and that  submarine captain’s name was bob Sharon! they try to read ship’s name on it’s side but are unable to  do so. They hail welcome to the men in small boat but are surprised when they are not acknowledged, only garth is able to hear the voices of men from submarine, garth tells his leader that men are calling from the sub but he is cursed by the leader who is unable to hear anything, men on the sub realize that that they are not being acknowledged by men in small boat prepare to take photographs of this strange boat.

Garth tells his leader to look and see that there are men moving about and there were  lights on the decks atop the submarine , men when they watch this spectacle are terrified ,suddenly the sub. vanishes and sailors return in stilled silence to the manati thinking that this is all witchcraft and start praying to holy saints, captain Sharon is informed that there was a sudden blinding light and the “whale” suddenly disappeared they accuse garth of working with the devil, captain Sharon asks garth if he is possessed by the devil?, garth once again tries to tell captain his story that he is from future and when he was picked up from sea by manati crew he was having this diary in his pocket which bears the year 1970 ,seeing this sailors are terrified and ask captain to throw this accursed creature from whence he had come , cap. Sharon silences his frantic crew and preys to get guidance, he tells garth that god has made it all clear to him what is to be done ,he will lay off garth as soon as land is sighted and that in the meantime he will be put to hard labour ,maybe hard work and sweat will drive away the demon possessing his body!

I can sense the devil inside your body Sharon tells garth but I will not be responsible for your death

Let it be my hand says mr perdie I will put a knife in to his belly. Cap silences him and tells that he and boson and all officers will obey his command, Garth will be put to severe backbreaking work and may be he will be so tired that he will fall off from the ship, a sudden flash of lightening announces gathering storm , now in throes of  the storm as the ship is being severely buffeted by strong winds captain orders the  dead whale bodies to be cut lose as they will have to survive with bare masts, garth is sent deliberately on a very risky job of gathering top sails, soapy tells garth that this is murder and he comes along to help but garth declining climbs to the top of the ship alone and soon realizes that many ropes holding the upper sails were worn out and they would not bear his weight, suddenly the ropes give way and garth is left dangling from the torn rope with one hand only there is only one way to survive, and he jumps….

“GARTH HAS FALLEN FROM UP THERE” exults cruel boson be quiet, god’s will be done says captain Sharon calmly. Meanwhile falling through space garth swings his body towards good ropes and is soon saved from disaster “you will be disappointed captain, but I am still alive”.” There is no need to feel insulted by him, now put him on steering wheel duty,says capt.sharon.

“HEY WHY ARE YOU TYING MY HANDS TO THE WHEEL”—Asks Garth surprised when he finds himself being tied to ship’s wheel. “ surely to keep you here you will remain here continuously for 8 hours without food or drink says Mr.  Perdie SHIP IS VIOLENTLY BUFFETED BY STORMY WINDS.

TIED to the wheel garth  struggles to keep the ship steady ,”and thinks—“captain Sharon is a madman ,sooner or later  he will destroy this   ship. Meanwhile on Polaris submarine headed by captain sharon’s 20 th century descendent a leftinant tells captain”prints of this film we took of that ancient whaling boat’s sailors has puzzled me we took their photographs ,but there is no evidence of their existence on this film.” I am seriously  thinking if it could have been the ghost of old whaling ship MANATI”-says captain bob Sharon

Captain tell me about your ancestor was he like the captain of “moby dick” novel chasing large white whale? Asks Leftinent “you may laugh Lt, but captain milo Sharon was a real barbarian and cruel villain ,he himself was a religious fanatic  and his ship was a floating hell, it seems his ship came to a tragic end,it seems that a strange fair haired giant of a man came to his ship and then….

After handling the steering wheel in a thundering storm continuously for 8 hours ,even garth’s phenomenal strength has almost drained out,boson asks soapy larkin to untie garth  saying that” there is a small easy job for you- cleaning the chain locker”. Larkin pleads with boson to spare garth and volunteers to do the job, an enraged boson abuses larkin and when he is trying to raise his whip ,garth asks him to take larkin’s request in a peaceful gentlemanly  manner , an enraged bosun taunts garth” you big empty shell!you are not even able to keep your eyes open ,do not mess with me!

As he is raising his whip once again suddenly garth’s hand  shoots out &grips bosun’s arm in an iron grip” I can still crush a croaking frog like you” garth snarls

Garth continues to hold bosun’s arm in a wise like grip and he is crying and whimpering “my poor arm” garth does not relent, saliors are watching the fearful spectacle of mighty garth holding a hated bosun at his mercey, larkin pleads with garth to let go”we will be hauled up for treason for this”

Garth taunts bosun “ you do not like your own medicine!, next time when you are whipping a poor unfortunate soul you remember this” garth lets go ,bosun falls to ground holing his arm in agony “my wrist! .my wrist..” don’t worry it is only bruised , not broken! says garth.

Garth turns towards watching sailors and asks them “ why not we take over this hell ship and put all accursed officers in a long boat and put them to sea!”

Sailors seem to agree but perdie is informing capt. Sharon that garth is fomenting a mutiny” thank god he has put this blasphemer in our hand, I know how to deal with such filth”—snarls Sharon.

Larkin—we can not take over the ship, this will be mutiny and it wiil be punishable by death

Garth- so what do you want soapy should we allow this madman to run this cursed ship on his wishes?

Yes [cap.sharon sneaking up from behind with a gun], because god  himself has appointed me to look after these dirty sheep and they will obey my orders!

And since you have tried to usurp my power by trying to take over the ship you have forfeited your right to live, I hold your life in my hands to do whatever  I may like do with it.

Sharon—cuff him! Garth  if you resist I will ask them to shoot you. garth is quickly handcuffed

Sharon—you will be taken down to ship’s hold till the time storm subsides then you will be brought back here and be hanged.

Storm is abating and garth in the ship’s hold is worried that soon mad cap Sharon will carry out his vengeance, meanwhile Sharon is seething with anger “garth tried to take over the ship, god himself has given me the privilege to lead, for sake of purification of garth’s soul his death should be exceedingly slow and painful, shoud I hang him on the front mast?

Perdie- but  will you not be landing in trouble with the courts when the ship returns to your country?

Perdie- damn! Tarback old man has totally lost his beans this time

Bosun—hold your tongue officer  do you want to antagonize the old man?

Sharon—courts can go to hell!  Garth incited the mutiny  his life is forfeited ,and will be taken on the will of my lord almighty!

In the hold of the ship larkin brings food for garth who has not eaten for days,sentry turns him away –I know you are friends with poor fellow, but you can’t help him now..

Soapy Larkin -Garth you are in bad trouble, captain wants to hang you on the front mast

Garth- he is a moron, when does he intend to do this?

Larkin- he will do this one hour after our Sunday prayer

Garth-I will try to escape, I have found this metal wire in the garbage strewn on the floor of ship and I will try to pick the lock of my cell door.

Larkin-you plan your escape when sailors are busy listening to captain’s sermon!

Garth- can you steal me  some food and bring it in the long boat?

Larkin—I am prepared do much more if you permit me I am willing to come along with you my friend and protector!

After one hour when Sharon is in full flow ---“do penitence for what you have done you wretched souls and light up the eternal flame of the lord almighty, otherwise you will also end up like that sinner garth hanging on the front mast as a symbol of triumph of religion over non believers.

Meanwhile garth is escaping after knocking down a dozing guard and meets soapy in the long boat

They hear captain going on and on with his sermon and hope that he will persist with it long enough to allow them to escape far enough

Sharon-it is time bring up the sinner garth to hang

Perdie-garth has escaped ,he has escaped from ship’s hold

Boson –there he is ,he is escaping in the long boat with soapy larkin!

Sharon-lower all the boats in water and bring him back, he cannot escape god’s vengeance and wrath!

Garth- soapy paddle as fast as you can!

Dusk is gathering and ship’s officers decide to call back the search boats  “those blasphemers should not escape””spread the sails we will circle and look for them till morning “screeches Sharon—I swear in the name of almighty will set a bloody example of these rogues.”

It is morning and there is no sign of “Manati” anywhere- says soapy

Garth-ok. We will take the risk of raising sails to increase the speed”

Captain Sharon gazes at empty horizon 25 miles southeast-

Should we call off the search and start hunting again?-asks Perdie

Garth should not escape me and god, whosoever spots their boat first will be rewarded 10 silver guineas

Meanwhile garth and soapy are adrift on south pacific sun is mercilessly beating down on them with strong winds buffeting them,larkin is delirious due to dehydration ,garth holds him back with difficulty when he wants to jump in the water to drink salt water, garth tells him that he can see many sea birds meaning land is nearby.

The boat is being watched by native Indians from the shore ….look! A boat!Two white men one is not moving. Natives help two men ,soapy who is unconscious is helped chief kerua asks his daughter tetwana to look after thin one and moisten his lips with water and not to allow him larger quantity of    water,”but father the big one [garth] is a real man!]” says tetwana.

GARTH SITS UP IN THE HUT PROVIDED BY NATIVE INDIANS –WHEN CHIEF KARUA ENTERS THE HUT HE ESQUIRES-how is my friend soapy?

Kerua—he is recovering, womenfolk are looking after him

Garth—thanks for saving our lives ,my name is garth

Tetwana-“garth” I  like that name

Kerua—tetwana you go .want to talk to this man alone

Garth—kerua where did you learn to speak English?

Kerua- from white folk who came to our island for fresh water and provisions, they taught us many things they were bad men they were our guests but they tried to molest our women!

What happened?

Kerua- we pushed them back to their ship, there was lot of fighting also, we are a simple peace loving people, but we can fight!

Some white folks talked to us about the love god, but some of them behaved   like monsters, are you also like them?

Garth – no, I am not like them

Kerua- good, then we shall go and dine ,afterwards you can see our warrior’s battle preparations exercises

Garth—it is good for me, I hope to meet your daughter tetwana later on…

Later on garth is on sea beach with Tetwana who asks why he keeps on gazing out to see, doesn’t he like here amongst the carefree people of nolofua island? Garth tells tetwana that his and soapy’s enemies are out there and soon they will have to move away.

Tetwana informs garth that his friend soapy will not accompany him, he is happy with his little woman,garth tells soapy that they have to move, if Sharon finds them here there will  surely be killed.

Tetwana promises garth that they will be hidden and protected by her people but garth declines saying Sharon must have seen them on the island through his binoculars ,will ask my father , the chief will ask them to go away. It is no use tetwana if your people try to fight for us many of them would be killed

Capt. Sharon prepares to land on nolofua island  to catch hold of two fugitives,asks his men to prepare their firearms and ignore nude shameless native women ,kerua confronts capt .sharon ‘peace be with you what do you seek here on this island?’-asks kerua..

Capt tells kerua that he is looking for garth and if they do not hand over garth to him he will kill many of his men, innocent women and children to avoid unnecessary bloodshed garth take a bold decision and taking soapy by surprise he hits his friend hard ,who falls unconscious ,garth explains to tetwana that may be capt Sharon will be happy to catch garth only and will leave his friend in piece thus saving his life! Garth explains to Tetwana that mad cap Sharon will agree to leave soapy who can lead a peaceful life, he takes Tetwana in his arms and embraces her in a parting farewell gesture.

Garth surrenders to capt Sharon, he is orderd to be shifted to manati ,soapy regains consciousness and is angry with garth he is informed by tetwana that he owes his life to garth’s sacrifice she looks at rapidly fading ship manati on the horizon and makes a grim prophesy “I can see a big storm brewing  it will blow away and drown this evil ship, but garth will not die…

On ship cap Sharon is gloating mocking a bound garth that he has captured him once again and this time he will not escape his clutches  .perdie informs captain of coming storm capt carelessly tells him that they will outlast it and orders his sailors to gather up the sails

Captain! Man overboard!...it is Peterson –cries an officer.

We will pray for his soul later on –says Sharon nonchalantly

Meanwhile  on nolofuwa islandTetwana and soapy are still talking about ill fated ship “storm will blow away this evil ship far away where the sea is very cold and boundaries of time become meaningless..

GARTH detects a gaping hole in ship’s side garth’s offer of helping with pumps is declined  water is rapidly filling the ship ,Sharon is informed of ship’s precarious state and  he is asked permission to take the ship to shore after the storm has subsided , but Sharon does not listen to reason and is bent on making a spectacle of garth’s punishment and wants all men to witness garth’s hanging on front mast on ship’s deck, officers when comment that it will be suicidal for men to be removed from pumping stations Sharon overhears and is furious and threatens his own officers with a gun , every body falls in line and are on deck to watch garth die , sure enough ship which is rapidly taking water  and starts to lurch and lists  and rapidly sinks towards bottom , and while Sharon is still gloating over garth’s hanging bosun loses his cool and blaming the mad captain’s folly for ship’s doom ,picking up harpoon he suddenly hurls it at captain impaling him and  killing him instantly.

Garth is left bound to ship’s mast ,perdie tells garth to keep company with old man’s dead body, sailors abandon ship on small boats , when water is overflowing the ship’s decks garth seems to hear voices [soapy]-I will never forget garth, he sacrificed his life to give me a new lease of life…[tetwana]—soapy he will not die ,he should not die….

Tetwana!..tetwana…if only I could break my bonds—garth thinks..

Ultimately garth breaks free ,he is not able to detect any boats on sea from sunken ship, suddenly Polaris submarine reappears and garth is puzzled “am I in 20 th century or 19 th century?

Garth is aboard polris submarine whose capt. is Milo sharon’s descendant bob Sharon ,garth is semiconscious ,sub’s leiftinent comments –“this reminds me of a story of your ancestor who was killed by a golden haired giant of a man whom who had picked from sea”

No! he was killed by bosun … suddenly garth mutters coming out of his semi comatose state

Capt bob is amazed.. How do you know what happened?

Garth is suddenly awake and realizing that nobody will believe this story., decides to bluff.. oh I am sorry captain I am garth , I was sailing solo via cape horn when I was caught in storm,and swept away by winds, professor lumiere at NAS will confirm my story!
